Jazz Vespers

Jazz Vespers

The Third Sunday of Every Month at 5:30 p.m.

Vespers, which has its roots in the medieval monastic orders, is an evening service of readings and prayers recited as daylight fades and the candles are lit. With the addition of superb jazz musicians an intimate setting St. Cyprian’s Jazz Vespers has become a favorite for many in the St. Augustine community. The service is informal with applause becoming the “Amen!” to our musical offerings, and the service is followed by a Wine & Cheese Reception in St. Cyprian’s Mission House.

Although the service is advertised as “Jazz Vespers,” from time-to-time we have other styles of music including Blues, Country, Gospel, Folk, Bluegrass, and even Classical Harp. In December our Vespers is usually a service of Lessons & Carols followed by a Red Train Tour of the Lights of St. Augustine. In January the Third Sunday usually falls on the weekend celebrating the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and we honor his name with a special speaker and a Gospel Choir. Other months may have a special focus as well: Black History Month, an Irish theme for St.Patrick’s Day, Earth Day in April, etc.

Daniel Carter created the following video from the January 2012 Jazz Vespers celebrating Dr. King featuring Janie Price and The New Mt. Moriah Gospel Choir:   Janie Price and The New Mt. Moriah Gospel Choir

If you haven’t been to church in a while and would like to just get the feel of St. Cyprian’s, our Jazz Vespers may just be the service for you. Bring a friend and join us on the Third Sunday of each month at 5:30pm.
