The gospels contain a number of references to vineyard and vines.

‘For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. (MT 20:1, LK 20:9)
‘What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, “Son, go and work in the vineyard today.” (MT 21:28)
Then he began to speak to them in parables. ‘A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a pit for the wine press, and built a watch-tower; then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. (MK 12:1)
Then he told this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. (LK 13:6)

And then there is the reading from John’s gospel that we heard this morning:
“I am the vine, you are the branches …” (JN 15:5)

You may have already noticed, but this Sunday’s lessons, and much of our music this morning, contain references to sheep and/or shepherds. The prime example is the 23rd Psalm, which we just recited, and the Gradual Hymn before the reading of the Gospel was a paraphrase of the 23rd Psalm. In the Gospel of John Jesus refers to himself as the “Good Shepherd,” and the Choir Anthem after this sermon, as well as the Offertory Hymn, the Choir Anthem at Communion, and our closing hymn are all references to sheep and or shepherds. Just so you get the point … Guess what? Today is known as “Good Shepherd Sunday!”

O God, by whose grace your servant Peter Williams Cassey, kindled with the flame of your love, became a burning and shining light to countless people across the land living at the margins of society and the Church: Grant that we, remembering his commitment to be set aside for your purpose among children, youth, slaves and free striving for justice among all people, may be aflame with the spirit of love and discipline, and walk before you as children of life and freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Every so often visitors to St. Augustine … or sometimes residents of the area who have not been to Lincolnville … ask to see the interior of the church. Almost always they comment on this quintessential sacred space and speak of its simple beauty … the vaulted ceiling, the wood paneling, the beautiful window above the altar. This church was built and consecrated 118 years ago on April 5, 1900 … when the Rev. Fr. Peter Williams Cassey was the Vicar, and the Rt. Rev. Edwin Gardner Weed was Bishop of the Diocese of Florida … the first Bishop of Florida I might add.

The good news of Easter morning is that the abundant life that Jesus lived did not end with death, and could not be contained in the grave. Jesus lived as a blessed beloved child of God with such abundance that he gave himself away to include all at his table … to bring wholeness to those who were broken … to bring life to those who lived in despair. That abundant life took him to the cross, but death did not end that abundant life, and the grave could not hold it.
