​Well, it’s been a while!  Three-and-a-half months to be exact.  Caren and I traveled fourteen thousand miles, and visited 30 states. 
 
It seems like you have been busy as well.  Assisting two Afghan families resettle in the area.  Supporting a Habitat for Humanity house with your generous gifts.  Taking on extra dates for Dining With Dignity.  Providing special holiday meals through the Ecumenical Food Pantry for those living with food insecurity.  Beginning the Mission House construction project by repurposing the appliances, cabinets, counters … even the kitchen sink.  And, one of our own, called to be a priest in the Episcopal Church, received word that the Diocesan Commission on Ministry has recommended to Bishop Howard that she be a Postulant for Holy Orders … which is the Church’s language to say that Clerene can now begin her formal theological education.  You are an amazing congregation made up of extraordinary people, and for that I am truly grateful.  Maybe Caren and I should take more trips like this.

​Then Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.”” The temple in Jerusalem of which Jesus is referring was one of the most impressive sights in the ancient world. It was a massive and magnificent building. Its marble walls stood 150 feet high. The exterior of the building was decorated with 40-foot-high columns of white marble. There were ten gates by which to enter the temple’s outer courts, each one covered with silver and gold plate. It was both the spiritual and the architectural center of the city.

Many churches around this time of year have what is commonly referred to as “stewardship Sunday.” During the service, either the Priest or a lay person gets up and reports on the financial condition of the church and on the financial needs for the coming year. Budgets are presented, and pledge cards are passed out. And often, today’s Gospel reading about a poor widow giving her last two coins is used as the text to support the appeal for financial stewardship. Well, relax—you can take your hand off your wallet. This is not going to be a sermon about tithing. There will be no pledge cards passed out this morning. I believe the Gospel story today is more about “trusting” than it is about “tithing.”
