The Feast of the Incarnation. The Nativity of Our Lord. The birth of Jesus … the Christ child. Christmas. It is the gift of God’s Son to the world, the divine presence of God coming alive in human form. It is God’s blessing upon us so that we, too, might be a blessing in return to God’s world. What a glorious night, made all the more glorious by this beautiful setting.
This morning is about something being born in those places in our lives that are on the one hand virgin territory … places in our psyches and souls where nothing has lived before, and, on the other hand, those places that have been barren for too many years.
This morning’s sermon is about “Good News;” it is about “wilderness;” and it is about Isaiah, John the Baptist, Jesus … and you and me.
When I watch at the news and read the paper these days I feel out-of-balance. When I consider the pastoral concerns of many of the people of St. Cyprian’s … it is at times like these that I know many of you are feeling out-of-balance … literally and figuratively. Out-of-balance …that feeling that something in the world just doesn’t seem right … in the world outside and … at times … my own personal space inside. It is as if everything is tilted … all the pictures hanging in the room need to be straightened.
