Worship Booklet Sermon by Rev. Steve Seibert Hey, it’s Easter Sunday, but I’d like us to retrace a bit from the last seven weeks. After coming down from the mountain of his transfiguration where Jesus had taken us to pray, Jesus set his face towards Jerusalem. In early March, we were marked with ashes as a sign of our mortality. I am reminded by our gospel reading for today of the dinner at the home of Lazarus just two short weeks ago. Mary, the sister of Lazarus, chose that event to anoint Jesus’ feet with ointment. Hers was an act of extravagant love. Video of service
Worship Booklet Sermon by Rev. Renee LiaBraaten Are you ready for a few questions? How many of you have ever participated in a protest? Oh, good, because you will be able to answer the next question: What does it feel like to be a part of a protest? Why do people protest? What sorts of things motivate a person to take part in a protest? Many, many moons ago, back when I was a student in seminary, our preaching professor would tell us, over and over again, that we were all trying to say way too much in our sermons. We were going off in too many different directions. He said, “Just pick one thing to focus on. Make three points about that one thing. And then, Amen. That’s it. You’re done.” Video of service
Worship Booklet Sermon by Rev. Steve Seibert We have now been journeying with Jesus and the disciples to Jerusalem for five weeks, after coming down from the mountain where we went to pray with Jesus. Today, we have been invited to a meal at the home of Lazarus. Sounds pretty good. But the setting is unlike any we have ever experienced or will ever experience again. Among the guests is one who has died and been resurrected and one who will die and be resurrected. But rather than me telling you this story, let’s hear from one of the residents of this home. |
