This is a stewardship sermon. That usually means it is about asking for your financial support of the work and ministry of this congregation. That is true … I will ask for that. But stewardship in the greater sense is about the faithful and responsible care of all that has been given to us. And this is a stewardship sermon in that sense as well.

Our gospel reading this morning is about a wedding with ten bridesmaids. Now that is a fairly large wedding … not one that little ol’ St. Cyprian’s could accommodate. In my almost 40 years as a priest I have done lots of weddings, but not too many with ten bridesmaids. But there was one that was very memorable, but not just because of the number of bridesmaids. Some of you have heard the story, but after the “Dearly beloved, we are gather here today …” I said, “If any of you can show just cause …” A man stood up on a pew in the back of the church, held up his fist, and yelled, “I object! I object to this marriage!”
This week marks the sixth anniversary of my ministry here at St. Cyprian’s, so decided to look at that first sermon I preached as this congregation’s Vicar. I think it worth hearing again, at least in part, since many of you in the pews were not here at that time. Remember, these were my words to the people of St. Cyprian’s six years ago, on November 2, 2008.
