In our readings this morning we hear an extraordinary story about the Prophet Elijah, and the prophet Elisha, whom Elijah mentored. And we also hear some rather confusing remarks from the mouth of Jesus. What do we, as people of faith, make of these in the context of the 21st Century?

Last Sunday we all woke to the news of the horrific shooting in Orlando. Like you, I was shocked and stunned. Although my plans were to stay home from St. Cyprian’s while recovering from my surgery, I was tempted to show up anyway … to say something to you … to lead you in prayers … to embrace all of you (if only figuratively). But I was still on strong pain killers and knew that for my health I needed to stay home … that you were in good hands with Bob Cowperthwaite here in my stead.
In our readings this morning we heard about two widows, both have only one child … a son … and in both stories the son died and then is brought back to life … in one case by Elijah and in the case by Jesus. On the one hand these are two stories about the miraculous power of God … through Elijah and Jesus … to bring life out of death … with the emphasis on miraculous. However, I believe there is at least one other lens through which to read these stories.
