So, the reading from Luke’s gospel this morning is about a man … a farmer … whose land has produced abundantly … so abundantly that he has no room to store all his grain.  Rather than sell or give the excess grain away to others, the man decides to tear down his storage units, and build bigger ones.  This man figured that he would be set for life, and that he could “relax, eat, drink and be merry.”  What he didn’t figure on was his death before the grain could be put into storage.  The story ends with the line: “21So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.”

This morning’s first lesson about Abraham negotiating with God is almost unbelievable.  The people of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah have caused a great offense against God, and God wants to wipe the cities off the face of the earth.  Abraham pleads with God that if he, Abraham, can find fifty innocent and good people, will God be willing to take a softer line.  God agrees, but then Abraham begins to push the envelope … what if I can find only forty-five people?  God says, “Okay, I’ll relent for forty-five good and innocent people.”  Abraham continues this negotiation until it gets down to ten people.  Imagine the chutzpah it took to talk God down from fifty good people to only ten.  Hold that thought for a while.

Before we go to Martha and Mary I would like to report to you about the meeting the Wardens and I had with Bp. Howard earlier this week.

On Monday, July 11, Joe Finnegan, Senior Warden; Melinda Lang Hilsenbeck, Junior Warden; Hugh McClelland, Treasurer; and I met by Zoom with Bp. John Howard, and Canon Allison DeFoor.  The wardens had requested this meeting to discuss with Bp. Howard the future of St. Cyprian’s, specifically around the issue of clergy leadership after my retirement.

The parable of the Good Samaritan.  We all know the story … we’ve heard in many times over.  We know the main character so well, we've named hospitals, nursing homes, relief agencies, and philanthropic organizations after him.  The Wildflower Medical and Dental Clinic on Herbert Street in West Augustine had its beginnings in the building right behind St. Cyprian’s … what is now the Church Office … and the official name of Wildflower is the Good Samaritan Health Clinic.

What a week.  Bombshell testimony about the January 6, 2021 insurrection.  Repercussions of Supreme Court decisions  … overturning Roe v. Wade … praying in schools … using public funds for religious education … easier to carry guns in public places.  Then … in Florida … new laws taking effect on July 1 … “Don’t Say Gay” … restrictions on teaching history, especially around racial issues … and more.  We are living in interesting times … and they are becoming more interesting each day.  Many of these actions have a religious overtone to them, yet they come from a government who’s Constitution guarantees “freedom of religion.”
