The idea of Sabbath comes from the Creation story … on the seventh day God rested. So once a week we have a Sabbath. But it was extended to include every seventh year … a time to let the fields go fallow as a means of restoration. In the book of Deuteronomy we have the concept of Jubilee … a Sabbath of Sabbaths. That is, every fifty years … seven Sabbath years … every fifty years would be a Jubilee year. In the reading from Isaiah this morning we hear about Jubilee.

This morning’s sermon is about “Good News;” it is about “wilderness;” and it is about Isaiah, John the Baptist, Jesus … and you and me.
Have you ever felt out-of-balance? That feeling that something in the world just doesn’t seem right … in the world outside and your own personal space inside? It is as if everything is tilted … all the pictures hanging in the room need to be straightened … and all the pictures in your head need to be straightened as well.
