Sermon by The Rev. Mal Jopling

Listen again to the words of today’s Collect. “Lord of all Power and Might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works. ..”  The Collect of the day is the prayer appointed each Sunday before the reading of the lessons.  The collect sets the theme for the readings.  In other words, the prayer “collects” the main idea for the day.

Sermon

Sermon by The Rev. Deena M. Galantowicz

Oh, it is so good to be here with you today.  I certainly know that each of us is having to deal with the news we all have heard about the changes going on in the Covid pandemic.  I care very much how this impacts each of you!    Honestly, I think the best you and I can do is to kinda’ go back to the beginning and wear our masks, wash our hands, keep our social distancing and be vaccinated.  I KNOW it all feels strange and unnatural – but you and I can convert this reality into a special time for us to just be quiet with God.  Each of us has much more alone time (whether we want it or not).  Let’s use it to be with God -to be still and listen in our very beings for that Blessed Assurance of God’s everlasting love.

Sermon

Sermon by The Rev. Andy Zeman

In the Gospel for today, from the Gospel according to John, Jesus says, “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and  drink my blood abide in me and I in them.”

Sermon

As most of you know, tomorrow, Caren and I, along with our two dogs, Micah and Karma, begin an adventure in our twenty-two-foot recreational vehicle.  We will begin a roughly three months’ “sabbatical” … yes, “sabbatical” in quote marks … that will take us to visit family and friends, old haunts and new vistas, valued mentors and neglected memories.  We expect it to be a “Sabbath-time,” and a time of R&R … Rest and Recreation … Rest and Re-Creation.

Sermon

I struggled with this sermon.  I spent several hours going one way and feeling like I was headed down a dead end.  It all seemed so heady and intellectual as if I could get at the spirit of what I wanted to say by setting an argument in front of you.

Here is the problem.  Last week we started five weeks of reading from the sixth chapter of John’s gospel.  Last Sunday was the Feeding of the Five Thousand.  Today we hear the words “I am the bread of life.”  Next week we will hear “I am the living bread that came down from heaven.”  The following week the text includes, “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them.”  And, in the final week of this series we will hear, “He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum.  When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?””
